Dear SCS Families,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You are heavy on our minds and hearts as we navigate the COVID-19 crisis together. Our teachers and staff miss our SCS families very much. We know how difficult this is on so many levels for our community. Our goal at SCS is to create the best educational experience we can, given these very difficult circumstances. The most recent directive we received from Governor Kate Brown is that we “continue delivering supplemental education and learning supports to students to the extent practical through independent study and other appropriate options.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We have gone through many different scenarios about how to deliver our curriculum and understand that it is best to have a self-paced plan appropriate for every grade level. Each teacher will do things a little differently, but we will have a combination of live video when possible, independent projects and supplemental resources for practice. Primarily, we will be using Google Hangouts and Google Classroom for grades 1st through 8th; Kindergarten will be using Seesaw. Through Google Classroom, you will also receive a guardian summary with daily announcements and classwork to assist your student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n At this time, we are working out the logistics regarding getting you materials from the classrooms. We may have a day where we do a car line drive through to give you textbooks and materials for an extended time period. Details are still being worked out and we will let you know specifics once finalized. Teachers are continuing to put together a bundle of lessons that are easy to access. We are also planning for ways students can have P.E. from home with Mrs. Stuckey, art with Mrs. Knee and music from Mrs. DuPriest. Our first day of “SCS at Home” is scheduled to be April 1st. Your teacher will be emailing you more information as the date gets closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a family, figure out a schedule that works for you. In addition to our curriculum, here are a variety of free websites that can supplement learning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n BrainPop: brainpop.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Khan Academy: khanacademy.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n IXL: ixl.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Scholastic: classroommagazines.scholastic.com\/support\/learnathome.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another great thing to do is have a family reading time where everyone reads at the same time. Have a cooking class, do art together, play board games as a family and explore the creatures in the backyard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Every student will have a different reaction to this new situation. Some may take this all in stride and others may be very upset not to be in the classroom every day. We want to wrap our students in support if they are struggling. We will be reviewing the new guidelines and will provide information as soon as possible. We will also be sending information from the office regarding SCS At Home remote learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ==============================================================<\/p>\n\n\n\n March 13, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dear Sherwood Charter School community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Governor of Oregon has declared that all school districts are to close effective March 16th until March 31st. Students will return to school following the closure on Wednesday, April 1st. We will use a reserve of built in closure instructional hours to close school from March 16th<\/sup> through March 31st<\/sup> as an extended spring break that will not need to be made up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Due to this new development, elementary spring conferences will be cancelled allowing teachers time to prepare for the possibility of SCS at home remote learning. Conferences will be re-evaluated once school resumes and announcements will be made on how they can be made up, if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will continue to prepare for SCS at home remote learning and communicate the next steps as needed if additional school closures are required. As a reminder to assist with planning, if you have not completed the remote learning questionnaire please do so by March 19th using the link sent by email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As with any closure, we will continue to communicate with families by email and on the school website. Spring conferences will still be held with meeting modifications. If you have scheduled a conference with your student\/s teachers you can expect to keep the meeting time, however the teacher will be phoning you instead of meeting in person. Please let your student\u2019s teacher know if you would prefer to cancel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the event that schools are required to close we want to keep you informed of what SCS families may expect. We will use a reserve of built in closure instructional hours to close school for a period of time to prepare for remote learning. The school will provide instructions on how to login and use online programs for remote learning. If it is necessary for the school to distribute classroom materials, this will be organized by a car line distribution method. Under the leadership of Ms. Raboli, we have been monitoring the global outbreak, as there is a risk that the virus will spread to more people in our state. We are getting information and guidance from the Oregon Health Authority to stay informed about tracking the progress of the virus, and preventing its spread in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our school already has an emergency system in place for all types of risks. We are enhancing these plans in the event that the Covid-19 risk elevates to the point of requiring action. Our primary goal is to protect the health and safety of our students and staff. On Thursday, Ms. Raboli asked our janitorial service to complete a deep cleaning of all areas of school use. This was in advance of the recent news of an elementary school in Lake Oswego closing for three days to complete a deep cleaning after a presumed virus exposure there. We will continue a regular deep cleaning protocol for the duration of the risk. An extended school closure would be a last resort, and our staff will be training in methods of using technology to teach students who are staying home in the event the risk threat becomes severe enough to close school for a period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For now, we encourage students and their families to take the same precautions as usual to prevent any other contagious illnesses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n – Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If a sink is unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Avoid close contact with people who are sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – If your student is sick, please keep them home following our school\u2019s guidelines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n – Stay home when you are sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the garbage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces (remember door knobs and hand railings).<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will continue to provide updates as they become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Helpful Links: Oregon HealthAuthority updates on COVID-19 <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nMarch 17, 2020 Update: School Closure Through April 28th<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dear Sherwood Charter School community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As of today, Governor Brown has announced that schools will remain open and she has issued new guidelines that all non-essential school-associated gatherings, including group parent meetings, field trips and competitions, should be canceled. Beginning today, we will suspend all SCS field trips and after school events for the next 4 weeks. A detailed list of those cancelations will be listed below. We will continue to monitor the situation and will follow guidance from the Oregon Health Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
