These recurring high-profile acts of violence in schools can have a deep and profound effect on everyone, especially students. \u00a0As a mother of two young men, one a recent Sherwood High School graduate, these senseless acts affect me in ways that words cannot express. As a Superintendent, I am equally as horrified, saddened, and angry &#8212; when a fire alarm is used as a way to lure students out of a building &#8212; it takes the level of worry and horror to an entirely new level. \u00a0It\u2019s unimaginable and unthinkable &#8212; yet now we <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;font-style:italic;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">to imagine and think about that scenario. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">Incidents like what happened last Wednesday remind us all about the importance of preparation and continuous safety improvement. Safety lock-down drills through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0ByNNA3LM2PVOQmNXS0ZuZ1Iwdmc\/view\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">Standard Response Protocol Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"> (SRP) are practiced district-wide to prepare for safety related scenarios. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" style=\"background-color:rgb(238,238,238)\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><font color=\"#000000\" style=\"background-color:rgb(238,238,238)\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">The District has worked diligently over the years on our safety protocols. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">Between today and Friday, March 2 we are participating in unannounced lock-down drills at all seven school buildings; those have been planned for several months. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">In addition, we have a very close partnership with the Sherwood Police Department and are being even more vigilant today about our school security. The SRP program focuses on four actions to help support student safety:<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Lockout: Secure the Perimeter<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Lockdown: Locks, Lights, Out of Sight<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Evacuate: To the Announced Location<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Shelter: For a Hazard Using a Safety Strategy<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">Please read the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/103khdqamiKXtlK_zVJF9OpZTzmHmdSeK\/view\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\">District\u2019s Emergency Preparedness Information Document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"> to learn more about our safety and communication protocols. The easy-to-read document provides information about the differences between the four SRP program actions, step-by-step procedures, and useful tips to share with students. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Our students will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and staff can help students feel safe by talking with them about their fears. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) recommends the following strategies:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Reassure children that they are safe<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap\"><font color=\"#000000\">Make time to talk<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.2;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\"><span safety procedures<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;background-color:transparent;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"
