The\u00a0Sherwood School District will join the other 196 school districts throughout Oregon to celebrate January as \u201cSchool Board Recognition Month,\u201d Superintendent\u00a0Heather Cordie announced during the Board of Directors meeting on January 9, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a public school board member is one of the toughest volunteer jobs there is, requiring countless hours spent working towards the best interests of students,\u201d shared Superintendent\u00a0Cordie. \u201cWe are so fortunate in our district to have the opportunity to work with a board that is truly dedicated to the service of our staff, students, and families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

School board members represent their fellow citizens\u2019 views and priorities, while providing oversight and input towards the management of the community\u2019s public schools. They also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, which is an important, highly valued aspect of education in Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2018, Governor Kate Brown signed a proclamation naming the month of January as School Board Recognition Month. \u201cToo often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized,\u201d noted Superintendent Cordie. \u201cIt is exciting to me to that the important work of school board members is recognized throughout the state, including at the Governor\u2019s level.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of recognizing the Board of Directors during the month of January, Sherwood School District presented each school’s library with a book donated in honor of a Board member, as well as the Board\u2019s ASB Student Representative Shaurya Gaur. <\/span><\/p>\n
