{"id":5678,"date":"2022-02-04T12:19:47","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T20:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sherwood.k12.or.us\/?page_id=5678"},"modified":"2025-03-11T10:25:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T17:25:29","slug":"frequently-asked-questions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sherwood.k12.or.us\/departments\/teaching-and-learning\/dual-language-immersion\/frequently-asked-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"DLI Frequently Asked Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Sherwood School District is preparing for the sixth year of a Dual Language Immersion class at Hawks View Elementary.\u00a0 We are currently accepting applications for incoming Kindergarten students who will be five years old by September 1, 2025.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cStudy after study has reported that children in bilingual programs typically outperform their counterparts in all-English programs on tests of academic achievement in English. Numerous reviews of the research have confirmed this conclusion.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n<cite>Stephen Krashen, <em>Language Researcher<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will students learn the same standards as other students?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, students learn the same content and the same skills as students not in the DLI program, but will learn them in Spanish and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is the dual language immersion program integrated with other programs at Hawks View?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they will be in a classroom with other DLI students, they will have recess and lunch with other students as well as participate in field trips and all-school activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can students learn in a language they don&#8217;t yet speak or understand?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Theories of language development suggest that before puberty, the brain readily absorbs a second language. Teachers strategically convey instructional content using songs, visual aids, gestures, and many hands-on activities to help students learn. They also provide many opportunities to practice oral language skills through structured conversation with peers and opportunities for presentational speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If instruction is in Spanish, how will students learn to read and write in English?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to brain research by Thomas and Collier,&nbsp;students learning two languages at an early age develop more of their brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although at the beginning, instruction is 80% in Spanish, that changes over time becoming 50% in English and 50% in Spanish, so students will learn to read and write in both English and Spanish.&nbsp;
